2013 Monroe County Fair...

Hello to all my stitching friends and blogging buddies...
before we get the party started, I need to give a shout out to my fourth little blessing that came to live with us on earth 8 years ago today! Happy Birthday Miss Ellie, you are my sunshine! Here she is with her best friend, enjoying her big day :)

Well...

Counted Cross Stitch Framed Pictures Class, Miniature

Seascape 2013 Fair

"Seascape"
taken from "Weather Wise" leaflet
Designed by: Prairie Schooler

JUDGES COMMENTS:
"Threads showing behind sea gulls. Fabric not stretched properly. Tension needs improvement."

Overall Appearance: Very Good
Presentation of Fabric: Needs Improvement
Workmanship/Neatness: Good
Attention to Detail: Needs Improvement

Award Given:
First Place Blue

My Rebuttal:
This one I hurried because I wanted to enter a miniature so that I had a framed piece in every entry category under the framed class. I agree with all of the her comments. I slapped it together and lacked attention to detail.

Counted Cross Stitch Framed Pictures Class, Large

Orchard Valley Quilting Bee 2013 Fair

"Orchard Valley Quilting Bee"
designed by: Little House Needleworks ~Diane Williams

JUDGES COMMENTS:
"Upper left and right corners - threads showing through fabric. Stitches need to go in the same direction. Fabric not completely straight in the frame. Tension not even."

Overall Appearance: Good
Presentation of Fabric: Good
Workmanship/Neatness: Good
Attention to Detail: Needs Improvement

Award Given:
First Place Blue

My Rebuttal:
I'll agree that you can see the threads at the corners - my bad. As far as the stitches going in the same direction...they do. I have looked all over and cannot find one example of a stitch that wasn't the same way. (That is a pet peeve of mine when I see mixed stitches so I am very aware of that when I'm stitching.) I'll agree about the fabric not being straight in the frame, as the bottom is a bit wavy and whatever on the tension - I give on that one...

My Rebuttal:
Of all the comments received, this one - completely angered me. So much so, I have thought of contacting the Fair Board. I am totally and completely angered, at the clearly personal reaction the judge had to my color choice for the ribbon. It clearly states in the Open Class Rule Book that each item is judged on the workmanship, neatness, attention to detail as it pertains to each project submitted. This judge clearly did not like my choice of black ribbon and because of that...judged me based on her own feelings about that rather than my workmanship. These ornaments are beautiful. Much more so than this picture shows. To write the comment that was written "Black trim makes it look like for deceased family members." is horrendous...and honestly a slap in the face.
I was going for a vintage/Victorian feel in the finishing of the ornaments, I achieved that. Unfortunately the Judge let her short sightedness get in the way and did not agree with my vision. Note to self: Only submit ornaments with RED or GREEN ribbons from NOW ON!

Presentation of Fabric: Very Good

My Rebuttal:
Damn thread ends! I missed one. And thanks for the "fairly even" tension comment. I'm going to start stitching on my head, maybe my tension will be perfect for her.

Fairly successful year...
I really honestly try to take the judge's comments as a positive. Although, as I am competitive and type A, it is hard to not go off the deep end when reading some comments....Ha! Ha! In the past three years of participating in our county fair I have become a better stitcher. I am more aware of my tension (although apparently not good at it). I am more aware of how I end and begin my thread ends (again apparently not good enough). I do crave to be The Grand Champion or even the Reserve Grand Champion of the Needle Arts Division, which includes: crochet, knitting, plastic canvas, tatting, embroidery, applique and needlepoint. So that's a whole lot of talented some body's to beat. Someday.....

I've won a great many wonderful ribbons in the past three years...
and I had to purchase a larger shadow box to display my hard won treasures. Here they are, my accumulated awards from the past three county fairs. One day...I'm going to have a small shadow box with the Grand Champion of the Needle Arts Division hanging by itself right beside this box! May it be so...

2013 Fair Ribbons

My County Fair Awards for the past three years
~2011, 2012 and 2013~

Well my dear friends...
as usual, the fair gets into my blood and gives me that drive to stitch, stitch, stitch. Yes, I have picked out my projects for next year. Oh, they will be beauties! And maybe will be one step closer to my ultimate stitching dream...
but...dreams are for another day. I want to leave you with what I am currently stitching, so that you don't think I'm leaving you for a long time without a good reason. I am currently model stitching and finishing for Little House Needleworks. So I won't be around much until I get this huge project completed. Will you love it? YES! You will!! But secrets are secrets and can't be shared...But, please do stick around with me though! I'll be back and have something new to share with you as soon as I possibly can!

Until next time...
I'll be keeping my hands to work and my heart to God, just like always, join me!
Love and stitches,
Vonna  xxx
