Day Thirteen...

~Greetings Friends~
and a warm welcome to the
Thirteenth Day
of the
25 Days of Christmas with The Twisted Stitcher

We are moving right along aren't we?!

Today, I have a very special share with you...
I have a friend. She's had a rather tough year in her personal life. She does a lot for me and a lot for others. She is a pillar of strength for her family and loved ones. She listens to my problems. She prays for me and mine. She treats me with kindness, with respect. We share a love of cross stitch. She's passionate about creating. I love to create. I love her and I love our friendship. You want to know something crazy? I've never laid eyes on her, not once. But a true friend she is. And when I was thinking about her this late summer and fall and all the rocky road she's walked this year. I wanted to do something special for her.

When...
I was cruising the aisles at Michael's, Joann's and Hobby lobby (I do that a lot - much to my husband's chagrin...) I always, always spend a large amount of time in the scrapbook aisles. WHY? you ask. Because if you look and gaze you will find a lot of great ideas and a lot of great things to finish cross stitch items in a new and different way. There is this scrapbook designer named Tim Holtz. He has fabulous stuff. There was one item of his that caught my eye this past summer in Michael's, it was an antique looking pocket watch case. It was empty. I stood and held it in my hands, staring at it for like 15 minutes. I'm not kidding. I think I was making a Michael's worker nervous because he came up at least twice during my daydream session asking if I needed help. :) I don't know if he thought I was contemplating stealing it or if he thought I was sick or what...but he was nervous! ha ha!

I put the pocket watch case down...
and left. But I kept thinking about it. Dreaming about it. What would I put in there. How big was it? Could I stitch something and put it in there? Hmmm.... Why didn't I buy the darn thing? Should I go back and get it? On an on through my mind until one day...it clicked! And I got in my car immediately - armed with my 40% off one regular priced item coupon - and drove like a sensible mad woman to Michael's and bought it.  (yes, this scenario is played out often with me too!)

May I present...
Diane's Mixed Media Necklace

Diane's Pocket Watch Necklace

Yep!...
it's Diane, the one we all love, from Little House Needleworks. She's my buddy and I wanted to create something that was designed by her, but with my own spin. This was perfect! I used the house from her ornament pattern entitled, "Bringing Home the Tree". I stitched the house and the snow around the bottom with the wee little path leading to the door on 25 ct. Vintage Country Mocha over 1 thread.

The mixed media part...
I used the same little evergreen pipe cleaners (I told you about in Day Twelve), I just cut an end off, trimmed it to look like a tiny pine tree. Then took a tooth pick and gently put some glue on random "boughs" of the tree. Then dunked the whole thing in snow glitter. Bam! Snow covered tree! Then to simulate "snow" and sort of give a "snow globe" effect. I used Mill Hill beads. I sent my little Christmas offering to Diane early so that she could wear it through the Christmas season if she had a mind to wear it. But really she can wear it all winter...although I don't know if they get that much winter weather in Arizona ;) Maybe she can say it is Indiana winter weather behind glass ~ a piece of nostalgia from her childhood home.

Anyway...
since my first purchase of this pocket watch case and the success I had in making my vision come to life. I have been watching for them to go on sale. Tim Holtz products are a little pricey, but they do go on sale occasionally. Well they went on sale at Joann's - all Tim Holtz products 40% off! WHOA! Again I got immediately into my car and drove like a sensible mad woman to Joann's. This time I was armed with a 25% off total purchase coupon. Oh yes people, that is power! and I got my cart and walked very, very fast like a sensible mad woman and went and bought every one the store had. I am now the proud owner of 7 Tim Holtz watch cases! Each one costing only around $3.27 ;) That's what I call purchase power! And I have already made and sent another to another dear friend of mine. You'll have to wait to see that one. And if I'm lucky another will be made before the year's end. We will have to wait and see.

Speaking of lucky...
today is Friday!! And I want to show some thankfulness to you my followers, my cheerleaders, my friends! If you leave a comment on *this post only* you will be entered to win one of the pink girly project envelopes I made (the one on top is what it looks like). A random winner will be drawn on Sunday morning and announced in the Sunday - Day 15 post. So you have 48 hours to get your comments left.

Have a great Friday! and with that...
that is Day Thirteen!

Until tomorrow...

  10. Vonna,
THIS posting made me tear up and made me laugh like a "mad woman"!! I saw myself in your shoes hauling butt to Michael's. Been there... done that!!!!
What a thoughtful and endearing gift you made for Diane. It is just darling!!
I hear people constantly complain about "modern technology" and they wish we could go back to the "old days"! At times I have felt the same. However, had it not been for computers all of us stitchers would of never met. I love my new friends even though we have not met face to face. So to all the complainers....try to find a new friend like I did. Vonna I consider you a friend as well. Thank you for all your wonderful ideas, your blog which I look at almost daily, your wonderful sense of humor, love of family and for being my friend. You bring joy to many including me...............Chris

You have truly nailed a crafter's psyche in regard to spending time just holding something and visualizing it's use. And those coupons--when you have one you MUST drive like a mad woman to use it before it expires. Thanks so much for what you do for us stitchers, and I wish you and yours a blessed Christmas.

The watch case stitchery you made for Diane is precious. I chuckled as I read your description of making your craft purchases…I'm sure that's most of us…certainly is me. I just LOVE getting one of those % off coupons…I often times collect several of them and share with "needy" crafters on the check out lines…I'm sure the store managers aren't thrilled, but the smile on a recipient's face does it for me!
I'd love to win one of your project pouches.
I'm looking forward to your next posting…this is the early morning "fix" that gets me off to a good day!
    Busy Hands…Happy Heart

  60. Vonna, I LOVE it! I bought several of these watches in October and had planned to do a tree ornament with one for my stitch group "The Sassy Stitchers" Christmas ornament exchange, but your creation opens up so many more ideas for me. I didn't end up using it for the ornament, but I did use wood snowflakes, scrapbook paper, jingle bells, and a button that you cover-covered with a cross stitch design.

  61. I got excited when I saw the name Diane associated with the necklace. The 'other' Diane is sure a lucky lady. You are a great pal Vonna!

  124. I can't tell you how much I have been enjoying your daily Christmas posts. The necklace you made for Diane is amazing! Thanks so much for your posts. Tonight when I went to Mass I presented my choir director with a Little House ornament (the house with the 2012 Country Christmas as she and her family moved this past summer) and a bag of gingersnaps.
