Award!

Hello Friends! This post doesn't have anything to do with stitching, but it does have something to do with fine arts and one of the four of my pride and joys.

March is recognized as "Youth Art Month" here in the U.S. We live in Bloomington, Indiana - home of my alma mater Indiana University home of the Hurrying Hoosiers. Today our son, Jacob, was awarded an award for his colored pencil drawing entitled "Swim with the Dolphins" in the Youth Art Month Exhibition held at the IU Art Museum. He was one of nine students representing his Elementary School. There is a population of over 600 students attending his school so it was a big honor for Jacob's work to be recognized!

I must say....and I know this is bragging so if you don't want to read that's ok....BUT I was so proud of dear Jacob! So proud....he's a sensitive little boy with a big heart and sometimes he gets picked on by more dominant kids....this was Jacob's day to shine...Mommy and Daddy were very proud! Go Jacob!! He's always been the best little artist and I've thought so for years and this award just affirms my belief. We hadn't seen the drawing before today and I wish I could have photographed our responses when we saw it! I was shocked at how good it really was! His Daddy was too...it's sort of like a Picasso drawing! LOL! Now I'm getting carried away...but honestly his use of color and the depth of the piece was perfection...in my humble motherly opinion :) It was a great drawing. There were MANY pieces that were there from the other 12 Elementary Schools from Bloomington, and I was simply astonished at some of them...these were all kids from Grade 2 (ages 8) to Grade 6 (age 11). There's some mighty fine, young artist residing in Bloomington, Indiana. Congratulations to all the artists awarded honors today! Yea!
I'll leave you with a snap of all of my pride and joys on our walk back to our car...this is on the Campus of IU - and although there are many fine colligate institutions all over the US, IU is one of most lovely colleges around - its all the limestone stately buildings from our own quarries that make it that way. Bloomington limestone is featured in the Empire State Building, Federal and Government buildings in Washington D.C. and is shipped around the world for its high quality...just a little FYI from good 'ol me :)

Thank you for letting me share a little profuse blathering about my babies :0) Until next time...

  2. Congraulation to Jacob. Good Job!

We need more arts orientated youth or all the arts will be lost. Glad to know we have Jacob to save those most important creative areas.

  5. Congrats to Jacob on his artistic talents! I can understand why you are so proud of him! Back in the day I had some of my elementary and junior high art projects show up in art displays in Newburgh and Evansville and I was so excited.

(Eh, IU's campus is OK...there is a much better one a few hours to the northwest, though...tee hee)

  7. You should be proud of Jacob Vonnie and shouting it from the rooftops .. it's sooo self esteem building when a child is recognized like this! Nice to see some school still support the arts .. so many have given up on art and music. WTG Jacob!

  8. Oh my goodness! What a talent you have on your hands! I love Jacob's drawing, and I really commend your ability to only brag a little bit. I fear I'd have gone on ... and on! LOL!

I'm also really glad to see that there are programs like this that celebrate kids who have talents other than in sports ... something that always bugged me when I was growing up.

  13. Bravo to Jacob! I think his art work is wonderful. I agree with you on his use of color, and I love how he has placed the dolphins just so, and especially how you can just see one of them jumping out of the water with the droplets.

I collect Outsider Art. Have you ever heard of that Vonna? It is art based solely on the artist's creativity, no rules. Jacob's piece reminds me a lot of that. You have a talented little man!

  15. Feel free to brag - Jacob deserves it! My son [now 30] won some art contests as a child and went on to major in art at USC. I hope he sticks with it - he obviously has inherited his Mom's creativity.

  17. First a great big Congratulations to your little hero artist. Well done Jacob that is a great picture.

Looking back on the posts I have missed I see you also doing Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss. This was always my sons favourite story and he read it to his own son Oscar as his bedtime story the night he came out of hospital after being born. As Oscar also won a painting competition not long back it seems like 2 little boys with an ocean between them have an awful lot in common.

  33. Well done Jacob - your mum has every right to brag, she must be so proud of you.

interestingly enough, there are more people going to the 'arts' performances now in Australia than to watching 'sports', admittedly, most sports are seasonal but it is still a good indication that people are really appreciating the Arts too and not just sport.

Terrific job Jacob! Love the concept of the drawing too. Dolphins are the coolest.
(I had my art hung in the lobby of my middle school in a special case many, many years ago and it still makes me smile remembering the peacock I fashioned out of fabric scraps. This will be a great memory for Jacob too-you have photos, I didn't).

  50. That is just super!!!!! When I was Curator of Ed. at The Appleton, I would hold an annual Art Exhibit in the Museum of students art. I would choose usually only a couple from each grade from the Marion county schools ranging from Pre-k through 12th grade and it was very hard every year to narrow down the entries so that they would fit throughout the Galleries. It was such a rush to have the Awards ceremony and the students and parents all in the Museum, always one of the busiest days in the spring. Again, congrats!!!!!!

  52. You have every right to have your chest swelling with pride over this achievement of Jacob, it is fantastic and even more so judging by the competition he must have had to win this !! GO JACOB :-))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

From what Su had said... Amy did a picture and my Mum (a few years ago now) stitched it 'prim' style after tracing over it onto a piece of fabric. (She is full of fab ideas, my Mum) I will have to get a photo for you to see what I mean. Can show you the real thing when you come to drink this wine with me and Su ;-))) as I would love to have you come round :-)))
